Two Chairs Telling
March 16, 7:30
Open Eye Theater
506 E 24th Street, Minneapolis, MN

(on 24th Street between Portland Avenue and the 35W Freeway wall)

The Twin Cities’ most eclectic storytelling series Two Chairs Telling is returning to intimate Open Eye Theatre for 2010 with five months of pairings mixing and matching storytellers, musicians, poets, and spoken words artists who lean towards the lyrical narrative and the narrative lyric.

Mar 16 Katie Knutson + Dean Johnson – Old School songs and New School stories with wit, whimsy and ukulele accompaniment. Katie Knutson is a Fringe Festival performer, storyteller and hypnotist. Dean Johnson is a Twin Cities comedian and auctioneer.

Companion pricing continues in 2010 – $10 for the first ticket and $5 for the 2nd one.

Loren Niemi writes:

As was the case last year, I do not have grant funding to underwrite the Two Chairs Telling Spring series. It costs an average of $500 per presentation. I am asking you to not only to come (with a friend) to hear these unique pairings of storytellers, musicians, spoken word and narrative artists, but if you can afford it, to provide a “cushion” – an additional measure of support for Two Chairs Telling. I’ll be glad to accept any amount you can contribute but want to suggest:

$100 – a “Thin Cushion” provides you with one ticket to each of the Spring Series shows as well as an additional ticket for a student, senior or neighborhood resident, who cannot afford our modest priced admission and my thanks for supporting these performances.

$250 – a “Thick Cushion” gets you two tickets for each of the Spring Series shows (so you can bring that friend) and a special dinner with the Series Coordinator (me) and a regional/national teller. Your contribution also helps cover the travel costs of the regional/national artists.

Recognizing you in the program is one way of thanking you for making this possible and encouraging others to support Two Chairs Telling. If you’d rather remain anonymous, just let me know.

Any contribution, “Thick” or ‘Thin” can be tax deductable. Make your check out to our fiscal agent, Open Eye Figure Theatre with a notation that this is for “TCT Cushions”. Then send it to me – Loren Niemi, 3708 24th Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55406. Simple as that!!

Thanks again for your generosity….

THE SHADOW KNOWS — ONLY TOO WELL
A Celebration of World Storytelling Day
3 p.m., Saturday, March 20
in the Expedition Room at Midwest Mountaineering
309 Cedar Avenue South in Mpls, 612-339-3433

On or around March 20, storytellers around the world will gather in events, large and small, to celebrate
WORLD STORYTELLING DAY at www.freewebs.com/worldstorytellingday

Theme this year is LIGHT AND SHADOW, and the Minneapolis event is a benefit for low-income members of Plymouth Drop-In to participate in the 2010 adult special needs week at Camp Knutson in Northern Minnesota.

The storytellers are outstanding, reflecting the depth of light and shadow —

BEVERLY COTTMAN — “Auntie Beverly”, member of Black Storytellers Alliance, tells tales and epics of the African Diaspora. She’s a former science teacher who understands the physical and emotional science of light and shadow.

KEY OF SEE STORYTELLERS, LARRY JOHNSON and ELAINE WYNNE — helped organize the first World Storytelling Day in 2003. Larry is Drop-in Coordinator at Plymouth Church and Environmental Storyteller with Rice Creek Watershed and Eco-Education. He knows why the great radio dramas, (including “The Shadow”) mysteriously disappeared. Elaine is a Psychologist/Storyteller with Circle of Cranes, and plays with the emotional depth of light and shadow. Her personal “Alaskan Tidal Wave” story has been featured on NPR.

JOHN MARTIN — Gullah Storyteller, retired engineer, and moving faster than his shadow, almost at the speed of light, as a beloved “full-time” political activist.

Anyone and Everyone is welcome, but stories are definitely aimed at upper age youth and adults. There is no admission fee, but donations, large and small, are gladly accepted for the Drop-In experience at Camp Knutson. For more information about the event or World Storytelling Day, please call Larry Johnson at 612-747-3904 or topstory7@comcast.net
